500 Italian prisoners of war have been sent to the Orkney’s where they are working on improving the island (or fortifying it). One of the Italians, Cesare, sees a red-haired girl who later appears at the camp asking for help because there’s a hole in her roof. Dorothy and her sister Constance live on the small island away from the main island because they are unlucky. When Con gets really ill, Dot drags her to the camp’s infirmary where she starts working as a nurse and she starts seeing Cesare.
A war time romance novel; it was a decent read and does have some interesting twists.
