Annie moves from Manhattan upstate when her boyfriend breaks up with her. She’s taking a job teaching position in a picturesque town. In this nice town, she meets Sophie and the two women become friends. As Annie is trying to get over her recent break up, Sophie tries to convince her she doesn’t need a man in her life.
Sophie gives Annie her pet spider to look after, and Annie absolutely loves the little fella. The feeling is mutual and when he’s with her, she doesn’t think about her failed relationship or about dating anyone else.
Then she contacts her ex, saying she misses him and he says he misses her as well and he wants to come see her. Sophie gets really upset over this and the two women have a falling out.
It’s a cute book – I half expected the spider to be an enchanted human but alas… he is just a spider. If it hadn’t been for the 52 Book Club Challenge, I would not have read this.
