The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot

The Princess Diaries

Book 1 of The Princess Diaries Series

Amelia “Mia” Thermopolis is the daughter of an American mother, an artist, who she lives with in New York City. She sees her father in the summer, at her grandmother’s French home. Mia is a strict vegetarian and she wants to work for Greenpeace when she grows up. To her horror, her mother has recently started dating her algebra teacher.

Her father has recently had testicular cancer and cannot father any other children. Not a problem right? Well, for Mia’s father it is because he is the ruler of the principality Genovia. Mia doesn’t know about this until her father comes to visit and tells her that she will be his heir. She’s no longer just the awkward teenager Mia Thermopolis, she is now Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldo, Princess of Genovia, the heir to the throne of a country!

Now Mia is taking princess lessons from her grandmother the Dowager Princess Clarissa Grimaldi Renaldo after school – and her friend Lilly Moskovitz, who is intelligent and opinionated, certainly has things to say about Mia not having time to hang out with her. Mia is desperately trying to keep her princess status a secret, but then the press get a hold of a picture of her, and she’s an instant celebrity. All this drives a wedge between Mia and Lilly…

There are some differences between the book and the film, of course, but all in all, the novels and the films have the same feel to them. I actually really enjoyed this book.
