1984 by George Orwell

1984

Great Britain is now known as Airstrip One, a province of the totalitarian super state Oceania. The protagonist, Winston Smith, works for the Ministry of Truth where he rewrites records of history to match the Party’s version of events. He observes Julia, who he suspects of being a spy, and starts hating her. Then she passes him a love note and admits she hates the Party as well. The two start having a secret affair, and Winston learns that Julia, unlike him, has no desire to overthrow the government…

I read 1984 when I was in secondary school, in 1984-ish, and I had forgotten how beautifully written it is. I decided on a whim to re-read it this year and I’m so glad I did, for it is a magnificent piece of literature. I intend to re-read Animal Farm as well!
