Book 1 of the Unwind Series
After the Second Civil War, life is inviolable from conception to the age of 13. Between ages 13 and 18, parents/guardians can decide to have their child unwound – a process in which all of the child’s organs are harvested for transplantation (while they are sedated but awake).
Connor finds three tickets to the Bahamas, for his parents and his younger sibling – but not for him. For him there’s an appointment to be unwound. He decides to run.
Risa is a ward of the state, and a gifted pianist. However, she’s not gifted enough and she is being sent to a harvest camp to be unwound. When she meets Connor by accident, she joins him on the run.
Lev is a tithe, this means his family has conceived him to be unwound but instead of being scared of it – Lev embraces it. It is his sole reason for living. He reluctantly joins Connor and Risa on the run – still believing that he should be a tithe.
I love this book, the description of one character’s unwinding was brutal – but Neede to understand the process. I have previously read the Scythe series by Shusterman and really enjoyed those as well.
Highly recommend this one!
