Heidi by Johanna Spyri

Heidi

When her grandmother passes away, 5 year old Heidi is brought to her grandfather on the mountain by her aunt Deta who has a job in Frankfurt. The grumpy old man takes to his little orphaned granddaughter. During the day, Heidi goes into the mountains with the goatherd Peter who can’t help but love the little girl either.

After a few years, Deta returns and takes Heidi to Frankfurt with her. She has decided that Heidi will be the companion of a sickly rich girl called Clara. Even though Heidi befriends almost everyone in the family (except for the housekeeper), she doesn’t thrive in Frankfurt… she wastes away because she is homesick.

I loved Heidi as a child, the little charming girl that everyone loved. On holiday in the Austrian Alps, I felt like I was in Heidi’s realm – close enough 😉 There’s a photo of me and my dad, in Austria, that was called Heidi in the mountains by my family.

Reading Heidi now, as an adult, was a different story, I didn’t remember the book being that preachy. It still was a very good read.
