Joanne Harris (born July 3, 1964) is an acclaimed Anglo-French author best known for her 1999 novel Chocolat, which was adapted into an Oscar-nominated film. Born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, she spent fifteen years as a French teacher before writing full-time. She has authored over 30 diverse books spanning magic realism, mythology, and psychological thrillers.
She was born to a French mother and an English father, an upbringing that profoundly influenced her storytelling and recurring French themes. She read Modern and Medieval Languages at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, and published her first novels while teaching. Following the massive, surprise success of Chocolat, she transitioned to writing full-time.
