You’ve Reached Sam by Dustin Thao

You've Reached Sam

Seventeen year old Julie is in mourning – her boyfriend Sam has just died. His friends are blaming her for his death and she doesn’t want to see anyone. This is why she didn’t go to the funeral and she’s not talking to anyone. When she calls his phone to hear his voice on the voicemail message he picks up the phone. Julie and Sam talk for hours and this keeps going on for days.

In their grief, Julie and Sam’s best friend Oliver bond – they talk about Sam, and they even go to see a musical together. Both Julie and Sam loved Sam deeply.

Sam’s cousing Mika is Julie’s best friend and she’s very upset with Julie for it’s like she lost both her cousing who was like a brother to her and her best friend in one go.

I enjoyed this book – in the beginning Julie is crippled with grief, then when she starts talking to Sam on the phone, she is slowly coming to grips with him being dead. Yes, it’s a sad book, but there are also moments when you can’t help but smile.
