The Weight of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf

The Weight of Silence
The Weight of Silence

Two seven year old girls are missing, they are the friends Calli and Petra. Calli Clark suffers from selective mutism that started after she witnessed a tragedy at home. Petra Gregory is Calli’s best friend, who understands her without words and who speaks for her.

Calli’s mother Antonia, Toni, is trapped in a marriage with a violent husband who spends most of his time working away in Alaska but when he is home, she and her children have to walk on eggshells around him. Now Griff is home, but nowhere to be found while Calli is missing. So Toni and her eldest child Ben do everything they can to find Calli.

Petra’s parents, Martin and Fielda, found their daughter’s bedroom empty in the morning, are frantically searching for their daughter.

The book definitely shows what lead. To Calli’s disappearance, but Petra’s disappearance came out of the blue for me. I detested Toni’s husband Griff with a passion and as the story unfolds have wondered more than once why she stayed with him. All in all, a good read – 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.
