The Enigma Game by Elizabeth Wein

The Enigma Game

This is book 4 in the Codename Verity series

Louisa Adair is sixteen years old and all alone in the world. Her father, a Jamaican in the British navy, was killed by the Germans. And her mother, an Englishwoman, died in a bombing in London. Louisa finds a job as a companion for an elderly woman who has just been released from being detained because she is German born. Jane Warner used to be an opera singer, known under her birthname: Johanna von Arnim. Louisa is to accompany Jane to her niece by marriage in Scotland.

When they arrive there, they are met by Ellen, a young traveller woman, who works as a driver for the RAF. At the same time, a German pilot, lands in Scotland and is to stay at the guesthouse belonging to Jane’s niece. When the German leaves, Louisa discovers the machine he’s left behind… an enigma machine. She and Jane figure out how to use it and how to decipher messages sent through it.

We meet some of the characters from the previous books in the series: Jamie Beaufort Stuart, an pilot, and his sister Julia, who is a spy.

I did enjoy this book but not as much as Codename Verity or Rose Under Fire. Nonetheless, this was a good read.
