Lord of the Flies by William Golding

A plane with schoolboys crashes on a deserted island. The first boys we meet are Ralph and another boy whose name we aren’t given. All he says he hopes that they won’t call him by his old nickname Piggy, and what does Ralph do? Yes, the little twerp calls him Piggy. Piggy is not a likeable character, he’s sickly and whiny but still… They find a conch shell and Piggy tells Ralph how to blow it. When he does this other boys come to the laguna where they are.

Kids are mean, I knew this in school and I know this now. I don’t think that will ever change. Though Ralph is cruel by calling the other kid Piggy and introducing him as such to all the other kids, he is fairly likeable. When a fight over the leadership of the group ensues I was rooting for Ralph to win over Jack.

Though this was not my favourite read, I am glad I read it. 3.5 stars, rounded up.
