Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

The Final Empire

Book 1 in the Mistborn Series
The full title is Mistborn: The Final Empire – but it’s often referred to as Mistborn, or Mistborn 1

For a thousand years the Dark Lord has been ruling with an iron fist: ash falls from the sky and mists come every night. The skaa people are of very low standing in society, they are slaves or worse. Half-skaa Kelsier is the only person to survive and escape the Dark Lord Ruler’s brutal prison. He has the powers of a Mistborn – which are based on the internal “burning” of certain metals, all of which the Mistborn can use, while most others can burn only one. After his escape, Kelsier has surrounded himself with the elite of the underworld and decided they cannot wait for a fabled hero from lore. He plans a daring heist in which they will use the Lord Ruler’s wealth against him.

Vin, a young half-skaa street orphaned urchin, gets recruited by Kelsier; she doesn’t realise she has the powers of a Mistborn. Vin doesn’t trust anyone due to her upbringing and Kelsier has his work cut out for him to get her to trust him. Kelsier is the one who realises she is a Mistborn, like himself.

The premise of the book is interesting and I enjoyed it – although I do think it could have been shorter. The novel relies on a character-driven storyline and the characters are interesting – I especially do like Vin.
