Film maker Nora agrees to help her new husband Paul fix up Hidden Lake Camp, his family’s summer camp. Paul and Nora drive up to the camp with Paul’s 18-year-old son Leon. His brother Gabe, his wife Salish, and four children are already there. The first night, Nora sits through an awkward dinner, and then Salish shows Nora her knives. When a knife goes missing everyone suspects the other. Nora doesn’t know who to trust. She is drawn to her nieces: 16-year-old Jones and 3-year old Lily.
This book builds slowly, but it’s definitely creepy. Nora seems to cling to sweet innocent Lily because she knows she can’t be the one doing all the weird stuff at the camp. When I wasn’t listening to the book, I was forming theories in my mind… this book did resonate with me – it’s the kind of horror story I would read and sometimes write (essays in school were my horror outlet).
