Mary Poppins by PL Travers

Mary Poppins

Book 1 of the Mary Poppins Series

Mary Poppins is blown onto the Banks family doorstep by the eastern wind. She becomes the nanny for the children in the house: Jane, Michael and the twins. Mary Poppins is a magical nanny who can slide up the bannister and has a carpet bag that contains an armchair. She makes medicine taste like lime-juice cordial and so much more. For Mary’s birthday, the children go to the zoo at night, and the zoo is run by the animals, whereas the cages contain humans!

Everyone knows Mary Poppins, probably most because of Dick Van Dyke’s portrayal of Bert and his awful accent that has been parodied lots of times. I liked the book, but it’s obviously geared to young children. It’s cute and I can see that young children would still love this book even though it was written in 1934. For me though, it was 3 stars.
