Book 1 of the Nell Stevens Series.
Nell’s life is a mess. Her relationship ended. Her business failed. And now she’s back trying to get her life in order. Because the price of housing is incredibly high, she rents a room in an apartment with a strange flatmate. Fortunately for Nell, he’s not home often and always away on the weekend. She finds a job writing obituaries. All her friends are in long term relationships and some even have children; they’re so grown up and have their lives in order. All this makes Nell feel like an outsider. She befriends octogenarian Cricket who is a hoot and very spright for her age. Nell starts a podcast about being a forty-something f**k up which becomes quite popular, with unexpected people.
After reading and loving this book, I turned to the TV series Not Dead Yet, and was extremely disappointed that all they took from the book was the names Nell and Cricket and then went in another direction. So the flatmate is as annoying and particular, but that’s about it sadly. When I separated the book from the TV show, I did start to enjoy it.
