Em & Me by Beth Morley

Em & Me

Also known as Delphine Jones Takes a Chance

Delphine Jones is a single mum to Emma, a very smart, gifted child. Delphine cares for her aging father and works as a barista. Em makes her apply for a job in a cafe as a waitress. She gets the job and reconnects with one of Em’s teachers who had a brief career as an actress after secondary school. By chance, when meeting the teacher at her home, the teacher’s husband hears her sing. Sanjay asks her to sing with him and the music teacher at the school talent show / fundraiser.

Meanwhile, Delphine visits en elderly lady called Letty to speak French with her. Letty was married to a French chef, and Delphine’s mum was French. Since her mum died when she was a child, Delphine’s French is rusty but it soon comes back… then, a misunderstanding messes up this relationship and Delphine really misses her friend.

I enjoyed this book, I was rooting for Delphine to finish her education (she fell pregnant with Em when she was a teenager and never finished her A Levels). Definitely loved her relationship with Letty, the grumpy old lady, and was hoping she and Dylan would get together.
