Flights by Olga Tokarczuk

Flights

This book is a collection of short stories that feels like a novel.

17th century: Dutch anatomist Philip Verheyen dissects and draws pictures of his own amputated leg.
18th century: A North-African born slave who became an Austrian courtier was stuffed and put on display after his death.
19th century: Chopin’s heart travels from Paris to Warsaw accompanied by his sister.
Current day: A woman travels to her native Poland where she helps her high school boyfriend die, he’s terminally ill and he asked her to assist him.

The current day story has been playing around in my head, more than the others. I can see why this book has won that many awards, though fragmented, it’s an amalgamation of stories that have to do with travel and death.

Read for the ShelfReflection Reading Challenge 2024.
Prompt 31: A book with a one-word, plural title.
