With One Person, No Vote, Carol Anderson chronicles the rollbacks to African American participation in the vote since the 2013 Supreme Court decision that eviscerated the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Known as the Shelby ruling, this decision effectively allowed districts with a demonstrated history of racial discrimination to change voting requirements without approval from the Department of Justice.
This book has made me even more aware of the social injustice in the USA. It’s hard for me to comprehend, as I was raised in the Netherlands, where I was banned from one pub because I called the owner out on being a racist… my activism days are behind me, but listening to this book, has made me want to pick up myself to demonstrate. The USA appears to be the home of the free providing you have a shit ton of money.
