The Bastard by John Jakes

The Bastard

Growing up in the French countryside, Philippe Charbonneau was always mockingly call the little Lord. One day his mother tells him why; his father is the Duke of Kentland. Though he is illegitimate, his mother has a letter from the duke saying Philippe will inherit half of his estate.

When news of the duke being on his deathbed reach the Charbonneaus, they pack up and travel to England so Philippe can meet his father before he dies. The Duchess of Kentland has other ideas, she refuses him access, and Philippe’s half brother take offence to him being in England. This half brother is a spoilt brat who hasn’t learned to share anything. Unbeknownst to him, he shares his fiancée with Philippe though.

After the duke dies, Philippe is refused his birthright and because of a fight with his half brother he flees to London where he apprentices for a printer. When London becomes too dangerous for him, Philippe and his mum set sail to the Americas. He meets Benjamin Franklin, Davy Crocket and Paul Revere.

I enjoyed this book and am curious to find out what happened to Philippe after this book ended. I may pick up the sequels.
