The Instrumentalist by Harriet Constable

The Instrumentalist

1704: Anna Maria is an orphan in the Ospidale della Pietà in Venice, Italy. Anna Maria is 8 years old when she first picks up a violin and stuns the maestro, she is a natural. She is on a mission to become the best violinist and a composer. She is the youngest member of the orchestra and she works very hard to become the first violinist. Anna Maria becomes a maestra at the age of 24.

This book was beautifully crafted by Harriet Constable. The story is based on the life of Anna Maria della Pietà who studied under Antonio Vivaldi. Vivaldi wrote many of his compositions for her, the prodigy. Anna Maria played many other instruments, and continued to play music for 60 years. She died in Venice in 1782, aged 86.

I loved reading about this girl I’d never heard of before this book.
