Kit McDeere is hired to look after the most infamous inhabitant of her town, Lenora Hope. Ailing Lenora was said to have killed her parents with a knife, and hanged her sister Virginia according to the town’s people but she was never tried and convicted. Lenora is the only survivor of the drama and the local children even have a schoolyard chant about the drama.
Kit has her own drama, her mother recently passed away, she took her own life with painkillers Kit was meant to have kept under lock and key. The local police have investigated and there was insufficient evidence that this was anything more than Kit’s forgetfulness.
When Kit learns that the nurse who looked after Lenora before she arrived disappeared, she starts her own investigation and the police doesn’t believe her when she tells them her findings.
As ever, Riley Sager has written a very thrilling story and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
