The Token by Sharon Bolton

The Token

Seven strangers receive a letter from a solicitor stating that they will inherit an equal part of the billionaire Logan Quick’s fortune. In this letter they are urged to keep the inheritance quiet. However, the news is leaked when one of them, retired nurse and artist Tara, shared it with a friend. Soon after, ambulance driver Sabri’s husband gets in touch with Tara and Sabri’s name is leaked too. Carer Cheryl’s (evil) mum contacts the news as soon as she smells money and Cheryl is attacked in the streets. And when all the names are made public on TV, wedding planner Robin, is burgled by his money lenders. Solicitor and call girl Holly’s blackmailer wants half of her inheritance when it comes through.

Logan Quick asks all of them to join him on his island St Helen’s, one of the Scilly Islands, and offers to take them there on his yacht. Two of the seven are afraid of boats and being on the water so they decline… but then something happens to incentivise them to meet up with Logan Quick.

This was a great read. Sharon Bolton’s books have been an auto-buy for me since I read Awakenings.
