The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates

Hiram Walker was born a slave, and when his mother was sold, Hiram was robbed of all memories of her, but he did get a mysterious power. Years later, Hiram escapes the plantation (and his father, the plantation owner) and is found by the people of the Underground Railroad who help him get to Philadelphia. There, he teams up with the people who help slaves escape to the north and his unique gift with water makes him an exceptional agent. However, he can’t forget the girl he escaped with, Sophia, who got captured and sent back to Hiram’s father’s plantation. Hiram is sent back to his father by the Underground and starts a relationship with Sophia. He wants to free both Sophia and Thena, the mother of a woman he met whilst working on the Underground…

I wanted to love this book, but for me it fell a bit short. I did think it was good, just not as good as I’d hoped.
