Book 1 of The Firekeeper’s Daughter Series
Daunis Fontaine is the daughter of a white woman, Grace Fontaine, the daughter of a very wealthy family, and an Ojibwe man, Levi Joseph Firekeeper Sr. She is raised by her mother, because her father has passed away. Her father had another child who is a few months younger than Daunis. Daunis’ half brother Levi Firekeeper, the product of an affair Levi Sr had when Grace disappeared (because she was pregnant).
Daunis used to play hockey with the guys, but had to stop due to an injury. No one really knows how serious her shoulder injury was. Levi is still on the team, and one day he introduces his half sister to a new guy, Jamie Johnson. Jamie is also Native American, not Ojibwe, and he’s a decent hockey player. Daunis and Jamie start flirting, and on one of their first dates Daunis’ best friend Lily is killed by her boyfriend in front of them. Daunis is suspicious of how cool and collected Jamie remains and how he takes charge. She then finds out that Jamie is in fact an FBI agent.
Because he’s found out, Jamie explains to Daunis why he is infiltrating the hockey team. There’s a suspicion about the team dealing drugs, meth to be exact. Daunis is convinced her half brother is not involved but soon learns that the bank account they share is rather flush with money. Daunis agrees to help Jamie with his investigation.
I loved this book when I read it for the first time, and now that I’ve read it again – this time as an audiobook – I loved it again. The grief, the joys and the budding romance, it was lovely. I also learned about the Ojibwe culture, which was very interesting. I’ve gone on to read the two other books in this series, and will review them soon on this blog.
