Mrs. King is the head housekeeper in the grandest mansion on Park Lane in Mayfair. She has a secret past as a con artist and thief. After years of loyal service, Mrs. King is suddenly and unfairly fired. Seeking revenge, she puts together a bold team of marginalized women to pull off an impossible heist.
The crew she assembles consists of:
- Mrs. Bone, the former housekeeper who holds onto dark secrets of the house.
- Winnie, the black market queen, who has her own scores to settle with high society.
- Hephzibah, who uses her theatrical performance skills to aid the deception.
- Alice, the seamstress, who dreams of a completely different life.
On the night of the estate’s highly anticipated, glittering costume ball, while the lite guests party upstairs, the women systematically empty the entire mansion of its priceless paintings, tapestries, silver, and furniture. Meanwhile Mrs. King is trying to find the real reason behind her dismissal.
I enjoyed this book, but I felt a little cheated for it wasn’t as good as I had hoped from reading the premise. Mrs. King is a wonderful character – even if her moral compass points the wrong way. Let’s be honest, if you’ve ever been unfairly dismissed from a job, you can understand her feelings of wanting to get back at your former employer. Or maybe that’s just me, though I would never act on those feelings!
