The alien race of the Oankali have saved her and other survivors from Earth and kept them alive in a kind of suspended animation for decades. While Lilith was asleep they cured her hereditary cancer by adjusting her genetic code.
The Oankali ask Lilith to help adjust the other newly awakened humans to this new reality.
This is the first book in a series, and I am really enjoying it even though science fiction is a genre I generally avoid in print (I’ll watch films and tv shows, but don’t really like the books). I fully intend to read the rest of the series after a few ‘lighter’ books because I have to know what happens to Lilith going forward!
