Book 1 in the Nemesis Series.
In the first chapter of this book, Danny Tozer buys nail polish for her toes, and just as she’s about to paint her toenails superhero Dreadnought is attacked in front of her, and dies. Before his death Dreadnought passes his mantle to Danny. The superpowers transform Danny in a girl (she’s trans) and give her the appearance she’s coveted for a long time.
Danny’s dad is a misogynist and a bully. Under the guise of making a man out of her, he’s bullied Danny for years. However, Danny’s known for years she’s not a boy but she has hidden this from her father. With her new body, there’s no hiding… Her father insists she sees a doctor and starts hormone therapy to reverse the process.
Meanwhile Danny has to deal with a TERF superhero too. Thankfully the other superheroes are more understanding. Because Danny is still a teenager, she’s not allowed to go “caping” just yet, but this isn’t going to stop her!
It’s the second time I’ve read this book and I love it just as much as the first time. Danny is a likeable character who deals with her new superhero status admirably. Her father is a despicable excuse for a human being and her mother has no spine (following dad). I really wish they’d make a film or TV show of this series!
