Lady Tan’s Circle of Women by Lisa See

Tan Yunxian’s mother dies when she’s a young girl, and she and her younger half-brother and her father’s concubine Miss Zhao (her half-brother’s birth mother) move in with Yunxian’s grandparents. Both her grandparents are doctors and her grandfather specifically is impressed by Yunxian’s intellect.

Her grandmother decides to train her as a doctor after they attend a pregnant lady in distress. Yunxian meets the daughter of the local midwife, Meilin, during said visit. This is the start of a friendship that will last their entire lives.

Lisa See has once again written a beautiful portrayal of a strong woman, a female doctor in the 16th century in China. I really enjoyed this book, and stayed up till 2 am to finish reading it!
