This is the sequel to Fourth Wing and the second book in the Empyrean series which I read for the 52 Book Club Challenge 2024.
Iron Flame starts immediately where Fourth Wing left off, Violet is now a second year dragon rider. Her relationship with Xaden is temperamental, they’re on again, off again throughout the book.
One of Violet’s dragons, Andarna, takes a 3 month nap to recover from the battle that ended book one of the series. She’s exerted herself which lead to a growth spurt and she needs to rest.
Violet is still not the most popular girl among the cadets and the teachers, but she is resilient and has some good friends. Liam’s sister joins the dragon riders and she blames Violet for what happened to him and Xaden’s ex Catriona turns out to be a nasty piece of work.
I really enjoyed this book, there’s more filling in of the back story as Violet learns more about Xaden’s past and his signet. I can’t wait for the third book in the series to see what happens and to learn more about that mysterious dragon!
