The Birdcage by Eve Chase

The Birdcage

The Birdcage tells the story of the Finch sister, or more accurately half-sisters. They all have same father: the famous artist Charlie Finch. Flora, Kat and Lauren all have different mothers. One part of the story takes place in the summer of 1999 in their grandparents’ cliff house Rock Point, when something terrible happened. Charlie painted a portrait of his daughters, called Girls and Birdcage during that summer as well. Flora and Kat bully Lauren, because their mothers don’t like Lauren’s mother: the artistic Dixie who seems to have been Charlie’s favourite lover.

The other part of the story takes place 20 years later, when Charlie asks his daughters to come back to the villa in Cornwall where they meet their father’s new fiancée, Angie who was at Rock Point during that summer as well. The women are very different: Flora is married with a child, she seems happy, but something is off. Kat is a very successful entrepreneur with a fear of commitment, and Lauren is artistic and still mourning the recent death of her mother.

I was really looking forward to this book, since I enjoyed Eve Chase’s other books. This one, not so much. I didn’t connect to the half-sisters, and just couldn’t get into the story. Sorry Eve, this book was not for me! I think ‘a book about Charlie and his conquests would have be interesting.
