Sila’s mother has gone back to Turkey almost a year ago. There was an issue with her immigration status and she had to go back while this is sorted out. Sila and her father are left in Oregon. As there is no one to babysit her, Sila’s father makes her go with him when he’s called out for a broken down car.
The owner of the car, Gio, is the widower of Sila’s favourite teacher who won the lottery with a group of colleagues. Gio and Sila really hit it off, and when Gio learns that Sila’s favourite animal is the elephant, he decides to adopt ex-Circus elephant Veda.
At school, Sila is made to be a buddy with Mateo, a kid she’s known since kindergarten and who is neurodivergent. At first, the two have nothing to talk about but then Sila asks Mateo to come with her to meet Veda.
This is a lovely book. Even though I’m not even close to the target audience, I really enjoyed it. I want to mention that I love the cover as well!
