The Lady of the Rivers by Philippa Gregory

The Lady of the Rivers

This is the 1st book in the Plantagenet and Tudor series.

Jacquetta is the daughter of the Count of Luxembourg and she’s related to half the royalty in Europe. There’s a myth about her family, that they are descendants of the Water Goddess Melusina. When her husband, the Duke of Bedford dies, she is left a young, wealthy widow. She falls in love with Richard Woodville, the late Duke’s squire and marries him in secret.

The Woodvilles return to the Lancaster court, to King Henry VI and his Queen Margaret of Anjou, and after the new Queen falls pregnant, the King falls in an unexplainable sleep. During his extended sleep, the Duke of York, Richard, threatens to overturn the Kingdom.

This was a wonderful read; Jacquetta appeared in the novels that were published before this one, like The White Queen, which is about Jacquetta’s daughter Elizabeth. And Jacquetta was a character I thought was really interesting so this novel was really welcome. Loved the link to Melusina…
