Seventeen year old Lily Hu has always been a good girl, she goes to school and stays out of trouble. She learns about a drag king who performs at the Telegraph Club and one night she sneaks out to go to the show with her school friend Kathleen Miller. This is Lily’s introduction to the gay scene in San Francisco in the 1950s. Then she discovers a book in a shop in which two women fall in love and she starts to question her own sexuality especially since she’s starting to develop feelings for Kath. When her best friend finds out Lily is a lesbian, she threatens to tell Lily’s family because “Chinese girls aren’t like that”.
I hadn’t read anything about this book, nor did I read the blurb on the back before I started listening to it. I chose it because it has the word “last” in the title. I’m glad I did pick it up, because it was a very good read and I highly recommend it.
