The Little Stranger by Sarah Water

The Little Stranger

Dr Faraday is called to nearby Hundreds Hall to tend to a patient, a young maid called Betty in the Ayres household. The Ayreses are an impoverished family consisting of mother Ayres and her adult children: son Roderick, who was wounded in the war, and daughter Caroline. Though Faraday is a fair bit older, he takes a shine to Caroline Ayres and starts visiting Hundreds Hall more often. It becomes clear that the hall is haunted, which is affecting all the inhabitants.

Having read other novels by Sarah Waters, I was very disappointed with this one. It’s a very slow burn and I found it quite boring in places.
