The White Princess by Philippa Gregory

This is book 5 in the Plantagenet & Tudor series.

I simply adore Philippa Gregory’s books, especially the Plantagenet & Tudor novels. I was lucky enough to get two or three of this series autographed years ago when Philippa did a book signing at Bosworth Battlefield. I think it was for The White Queen book tour.

It is quite fitting after writing the above, that this book starts following the battle of Bosworth, where Richard III was defeated by Henry Tudor. The White Princess is the story of the Princess Elizabeth of York, the eldest daughter of King Edward IV and lady Elizabeth Grey, the beautiful young widow who captured the heart of the king. Elizabeth (the younger) was in love with her uncle Richard III and according to Gregory, she was his mistress and highly regarded at his court. However, after Richard was killed at the Battle of Bosworth, Elizabeth is married off to the man who killed him: Henry Tudor, the new king of England. Henry refuses to marry her until she is proven to be fertile, and during their betrothal he makes her sleep with him until she is pregnant and then he marries her. During their marriage Henry remains wary of Elizabeth, though he loves her and often refers to her as the most beautiful woman in England.
