Mr Mercedes by Stephen King

Mr Mercedes

Book 1 of the Bill Hodges trilogy.

Kermit William (Bill) Hodges is a retired cop is haunted by an unsolved crime and he’s contemplating suicide. An unknown assailant stole a Mercedes and drove into a crowd waiting for a job fair to open, killing 8 and wounding15 people. Bill gets a letter from the perk (this is what he calls himself instead of perp) claiming credit for the attack. Bill starts an investigation and meets the beautiful Janey, the sister of the woman, Olivia, whose Merc was used for the attack. They start seeing each other. Just before Olivia’s funeral, Bill is introduced to Janey’s niece Holly, who is (I think) autistic. Right after the funeral, Bill’s car is blown up when Janey starts it. Holly, and Hodges’ neighbour, Jerome, end up helping him with his investigation.

The other person the book follows is Brady Hartfield, who works as a computer tech and an ice cream man in Bill Hodges area. He lives with his alcoholic mother, in the basement, like sociopaths in films do… just saying…. And he is the guy who did it. Mr. Mercedes.

I have been a fan of Stephen King for a long time, though I did go off his books for a while (it was Dreamcatcher that did it), but I’m back on them now and I intend to read the ones I haven’t yet. Mr. Mercedes is a thriller, and thus far I’ve only read fantasy or horror by King. I really enjoyed this book! And the TV series based on the book is really good too.
