A middle aged English professor meets an enigmatic young writer who is to become her colleague. At the same time, her husband is embroiled in a massive scandal at the university for he has been sleeping with students. She knew he was sleeping around, but he’d promised he wasn’t sleeping with students anymore. The woman who did bring the information to light was sleeping with her husband after she was his student. As a form of revenge, the professor begins an affair with the writer, Vladimir, in her mind. She starts to think he feels the same about her, and he doesn’t like staying with his wife, who was suicidal after their child was born.
The professor thinks about Vladimir all the time and she cannot wait until she has her lunch date with him. Meanwhile, her husband is taken to court and the university wants her to stop teaching too.
This book was okay, up until about two thirds in when she went a little overboard with her fantasies. I think all us heterosexual ladies sometimes fantasise about a hunky man, fictional or real…. But this professor takes it a step too far.
