Book 1 of the Secrets of the Nile Series
19 year old Inez Olivera has everything, she’s wealthy and belongs to the jet set of Buenos Aires, Argentina of the late 1800s. What she wants most in the world is to spend more time with her parents. They’re Egyptologists who spend most of the year in Egypt, and too little time back home for Inez’ liking. Then one day she receives a letter from her mother’s brother, her Tio Ricardo, with devastating news; her parents were killed.
Inez gets on the first boat to Egypt with just an ancient ring her father sent to her, and a sketch book on her person. On the train in Egypt, a man steals the ancient ring. When she finally arrives in Cairo, her uncle wants to send her back immediately. But Inez has other things in mind; she intends to find out what happened to her parents and she wants to retrieve the ring. Tio Ricardo’s assistant is a young Englishman called Whitford Hayes who is tasked with getting Inez on the boat back to Argentina. Inez stows away on her uncle’s riverboat when he sets off to find Cleopatra’s tomb. When she falls overboard, it is Whit who saves her life. Inez helps her Tio locate Cleopatra’s resting place, she seems to have a magical connection to the pharaoh. There are people following them, people who want Cleopatra’s remains for nefarious reasons, and one of them is related to Inez!
Initially I thought this was going to be a five star read, but Inez started to annoy me. She’s constantly running towards danger and she is a bit whiny. That aside, I did enjoy the book and will definitely read the sequel. I listened to the audiobook that had 2 narrators, one for Inez and one for Whit.
