Book 1 of the Malcom X series.
X tells the story of a young man, Malcolm Little, it’s the ‘origin story’ of Malcolm X. Young Malcolm wanted to be a lawyer but was told that would never happen. After this, he starts to go to clubs in Boston and New York. He’s popular with the ladies, but he only has eyes for the rich white woman he’s seeing. When she convinces him and some other friends to rob some houses they are caught and place all the blame on Malcolm.
Malcolm, aged 20, goes to prison and this is where he comes into contact with Islam and he changes his last name from Little to Shabazz. One of the authors of the book, Ilyasah, is in fact Malcom X’s daughter.
It was an interesting read. Malcolm seemed like a cool cat. I’m curious about the sequels and will stick them on my enormous tzundoku…
