Yellowface by Rebecca F Kuang

Yellowface

June Hayward is a writer, but not a successful one. Her college friend Athena Liu is a successful author. When Athena dies in her presence, June steals her latest manuscript and rewrites it before submitting it to a publisher. The book about Chinese groups in WW1 is published under her first names Juniper Song to make her sound a little more Asian.

Once the book is out allegations are made that June has plageriased Athena’s work and she becomes the target of a Twitter-campaign to cancel her. June maintains that the book is her own work.

Once I started reading this book, I couldn’t stop. The story is engrossing and though June’s theft is deplorable, I couldn’t help but like her a little bit.
