Katarina ‘Kat’ Shaw has always wanted to be an ice dancer/figure skater. Her boyfriend Heath Rocha will do anything to make Kat happy. The two met when Heath was sleeping in the stables of Kat’s parents’ farm.
Kat’s mum died when she was six years old, and her dad passed away when she was sixteen. After this, Kat lives with her alcoholic, abusive older brother Lee. Lee attacks them at one point, which prompts Kat and Heath to leave for their first U.S. Figure Skating National Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. Following Nationals, they leave Illinois permanently when Olympic champion Sheila Lin invites them to train at the Lin Ice Academy in Los Angeles.
Heath leaves the academy abruptly and vanishes after overhearing Kat speak candidly about their relationship. Kat briefly partners with Garrett Lin while he is gone. When he returns, he partners up with Garrett’s twin sister Bella.
Following a massive public screaming match after the Olympic trials, Kat leaves Heath, Bella, and the competitive skating world entirely, remaining missing from their lives for a decade.
Ten years later, after the documentary forces them to confront their past, Kat and Heath finally reunite, leave their old lives behind, and move back to Illinois together to run a skating school alongside Bella.
The book is based on one of my favourite classics: Wuthering Heights, and it’s about ice dancing, a sport I always wanted to do. Unfortunately, I cannot skate at all so this was never going to happen. However, the appeal stayed and I really enjoy watching ice dancing during the Olympics.
I really enjoyed this book.
