It’s 1819 and the cemeteries of London are full. There’s coin to be made in death. Bonnie and Crawford make they money by nefarious schemes and then their luck runs out. At Bonnie’s feet lies a man in a pool of his own blood – and now she needs to disappear.
Crawford finds Bonnie a job as a lady’s maid in a very grand house on the Thames. It’s ownder Mr Moncrieff is constantly drawing mausoleums for his dead wife. Cissie, the Moncrieffs’ peculiar daughter, is forever scribbling imaginary love letters to herself from a chap called Lord Duggan. Bonnie wonders what happened to Mrs Moncrieff, the recently deceased lady of the house.
I love a good historical fiction novel, and this was just that. It’s a good read, full of intrigue and suspense. And I really enjoyed it.
However, I did think that Elizabeth MacNeal’s The Doll Factory was better than this one.
