Evelyn is a middle-aged woman who visits her friend Mrs. Threadgoode who tells her her life story. She recalls the Whistle Stop café run by Idgie and her friend Ruth and they’ve green fried tomatoes among other things. Idgie fell in love with Ruth when she first visited and when Ruth left to marry Idgie was inconsolable. Idgie kept an eye on Ruth’s husband and when she found out that he was abusing her, Idgie came to fetch Ruth and returned her to Whistle Stop.
This was definitely not my favourite book of the year. I thought it was quite boring and I couldn’t get into the story. I didn’t really care for the characters either; Evelyn is as bland as they come – Even her alter ego was boring. The sort of love story between Idgie and Ruth didn’t really take off, or at least it didn’t seem to. It took me quite awhile to get through the book because I was determined to finish, but I didn’t get much out of it.
